Workshop Synopses
‘Skilful Skies’ Oil Painting Workshop – 2 Hours
Intended for beginner and improving painters, during this workshop I will guide you through my approach to painting cloudscapes and sunset skies, covering the materials and equipment I use and my process for designing artworks. Through interactive demonstrations, I will then explain my painting methods including the application of paint using a palette knife and brushes and my philosophy towards colour mixing focussing on creating depth, luminosity and harmony.
‘Painting Norfolk’ Oil or Line and Wash (ink and watercolour) Painting Workshop – 3 Hours
Through the analysis of artworks by two of the greatest Norfolk landscape painters of the 20th century, and interactive demonstrations, you will learn how these master artists approached painting the unique but challenging Norfolk landscape. Using case studies by Edward Seago and John Arnesby Brown, we will explore the compositional, technical and artistic elements of some of their finest works, enabling you to apply this knowledge to your own art practice so that you may discover the essence of ‘Painting Norfolk’.
‘Sketching Norfolk’ Line and Wash (ink and watercolour) Workshop – 2 Hours
Aimed at the complete beginner or those who are very new to sketching or painting, this workshop will provide a straightforward introduction to sketching in line and wash; a fun and expressive combination of ink drawing and watercolour painting. Through practical demonstrations and paint-along exercises, I will provide you with the knowledge and skills to begin sketching in line and wash. We will explore the basic materials and specific drawing and painting techniques needed for line and wash before sketching scenes inspired by the Norfolk landscape.
‘Rural Sketching’ Line and Wash (ink and watercolour) Workshop– 2 Hours
Intended for the improving beginner or intermediate painter / sketcher, or those who have attended my introduction to line and wash workshop, my ‘Rural Sketching’ workshop provides an opportunity to improve your painting and drawing through line and wash sketching. Through practical demonstrations and paint-along exercises, I will provide you with tips and techniques to help you advance your line and wash sketches with consideration of linework, paint application, composition and form. We will begin with an overview of the basic materials and specific drawing and painting techniques needed for line and wash before sketching scenes inspired by rural landscapes.
‘Light & Shade’ Pencil Sketching Workshop – 2 Hours
Aimed at beginner landscape artists / sketchers, this pencil drawing workshop is designed to help you improve your ability to see and recreate tone (variations in light and dark), enabling you to represent light, shadow and distance more efficiently in your paintings and drawings. Through demonstrations and exercises using tonal sketches, drawn in shades of grey rather than lines, we will explore methods for communicating the effects of light and space in artworks as well as considering approaches for composing landscape artworks.
